No Days Off: Summer Flood Control in Valley Ranch
Pathway alongside a Valley Ranch canal with lush greenery and trees on a clear, sunny day.
June marks the official start to summer, and in North Texas that typically means clear skies and intense heat. Even with scattered precipitation, Valley Ranch flood control and IFCD 3’s work to support it doesn’t stop. In fact, maintenance during dry months helps us keep the system running smoothly all year long.
During the summer, our operations team conducts proactive repairs and preventative maintenance across various points of our flood control system. This can include reinforcing existing structures, filling cracks and anomalies along canal walls, and inspecting the levee and canal banks for erosion. We also monitor soil conditions across Valley Ranch for signs of wear or shifting ground that could impact the system over time.
Summer also gives us a better look at areas that are below the surface at other times of the year. Water levels are often lower in the summer due to the lack of rainfall. We take this opportunity to make progress on maintenance projects and repairs that are easier to access at low levels. One example includes IFCD 3’s sluice gate project, which will replace aging infrastructure with lighter, more efficient gates.
IFCD 3 is intentional and proactive in preventing potential issues and keeping the system in prime condition. By using the summer months to inspect, repair and upgrade our infrastructure, Valley Ranch flood control will be ready when the rain returns.
