Water Stewardship in Valley Ranch: Who Manages Our Water?
Last fall, we explored the journey a raindrop takes through Valley Ranch, but rain isn’t the only water moving through our community. Long after a storm passes, an entirely different network keeps water flowing into showers, lawns, dishwashers and everywhere else it’s needed. In this blog, we’re zooming out to show how our work fits into the broader picture of water stewardship in Valley Ranch.
Stormwater: The Part We Steward
At IFCD 3, we maintain the systems that manage the thousands of gallons of water in Valley Ranch’s 5.5 miles of canals and ponds. This work continues year‑round and includes:
The levee that protects our community from the 100-year floodplain
The pump station that moves excess water to the Elm Fork of the Trinity River
The canals and ponds that guide stormwater through Valley Ranch
These elements work as a cohesive system to reduce flood risk and keep our community safe.
Where Our Work Connects With Others
Meanwhile, the water used inside homes and businesses is managed by an entirely different entity. The City of Irving’s Water Utilities Department ensures:
Clean, treated drinking water reaches every property
Pumps and pipelines keep water moving reliably
Wastewater is collected and transported for treatment
Together, our systems form a complete picture of water stewardship in Valley Ranch. One system supports everyday water use, and the other protects the community from flooding. Both are essential, and both operate 24/7/365.
