How to Love Our Valley Ranch Waterways

For many, February often means love letters, chocolates and flowers for our loved ones. For IFCD 3, it means sharing ways the Valley Ranch community can give a little love to our waterways, too. Keep reading to see how!

#1 Properly Dispose of Trash

Whether it’s the plastic bags holding our groceries or the disposable cups from last night’s drive-thru dinner, proper disposal of these items keeps our community’s streets, parks and waterways clean.

When trash ends up in our canals, it can block drains, restrict the flow of water and even damage our pumps. This reduces the overall effectiveness of our flood control system.

Next time you’re getting rid of something, make sure to properly dispose of it in a garbage or recycling bin. To make an even bigger impact, consider volunteering with Keep Irving Beautiful, a local nonprofit on a mission to educate and engage the community in litter reduction, beautification and recycling.

#2 Report Issues Impacting our Waterways

Storms and weather events can cause debris, fallen trees and blockages in and near our canals and creeks. When storm debris enters our waterways, it can cause serious drainage issues.

Our team regularly inspects and monitors our waterways, but we love your help, too! We appreciate and depend on residents reporting maintenance needs. This equips our team to quickly address them and ensure our system continues to function as designed.

If you see an obstruction or issue with our flood control channels, please contact us.

#3 Plant Native Wildflowers

Healthy waterways depend on stable soil, clean banks and controlled water flow. Native wildflowers support all three. Texas wildflowers’ deep root systems help absorb rainwater and anchor soil in place. We use them to prevent erosion and minimize sediment in our canals.

Visit your local nursery to buy a packet or two of Texas wildflower seeds. It’s a beautiful way to show some love to our waterways and our Valley Ranch community!
